Safety Tips for Virtual Runners
Before the Race
- Choose a safe route away from high-traffic areas, busy intersections and is likely to be the least crowded during the time you are running.
- Map out your route ahead of time. You can do this in a few ways. It is not recommended to use your car, because a car travels along a different path than a walker or a runner. Try these ideas:
- Ride your bike along your prospective route. Use a GPS tracking app to log your distance.
- As you are training for this 10K, use a tracking app to measure different routes.
- Take a lot of walks and measure the distances with a tracking app.
- Use a program like https://onthegomap.com/#/create to map out your prospective route. On The Go Map is super easy to use. You put a dot where you want to start then plot it out by adding dots to your chosen path. It tracks the miles as you go. You can "undo" all the way back and start over, too.
On Your Race Day
- Bring hydration! You won’t have the benefit of traditional water stops. But maybe don’t overdo the hydration. Remember, you won’t have Porta Potties along the route, either!
- Refrain from touching the “walk” button at intersections, if you can. If you need to push it, use your elbow.
- Practice physical distancing from those who are not within your immediate family and friends “bubble.” Droplets carry further when someone is breathing hard due to exertion. Consider staying 10 to 12 feet away from others who are not in your family and friends bubble.
- Bring a face covering. If you are away from others, you can pull it down. If you encounter a group, pull it up before you get within 12 feet. Once you are away, you can pull it back down.
- Wash your hands as soon as possible.
